Tupuānuku is the University of Canterbury’s largest student accommodation facility to date, accommodating up to 508 students at a time. John Jones Steel was awarded the contract to draught, supply, and erect the 1,100 tonnes of steel required for the five-storey project.

Our in-house draughting team produced the shop drawings, while our Timaru and Christchurch workshops collaboratively fabricated the steel. Our paint shop applied the protective primer coat. Then, our trucks transported the final product to the site, where our site team assembled large sections on the ground before lifting them into place using our cranes. This minimised the at-height work and sped up the erection process.
