Steel Fabrication

John Jones Steel is one of the largest and most advanced structural steel fabricating enterprises in New Zealand.

With 19,300m² combined facilities we offer great flexibility to complete projects. Our facilities include a modern and well-equipped workshop in Christchurch extending to more than 14,800m² and a further 4500m² workshop in Timaru.

Our workshops include state of the art fabrication machinery capable of running multiple shifts to meet demand. Our Christchurch facility consists of a large fabrication workshop, a purpose built heated paint shop, a draughting office and large administration office. Our paint shop specialises in single and multi-coat systems.

Shop Drawings & Detailing

We offer a full shop drawing service on all projects with our in-house team of over 12 dedicated drafting professionals, utilising Tekla Structures which is arguably the most advanced structural steel 3d modelling and detailing software.

The use of 3d modelling gives us the highest level of accuracy and enables the successful delivery of complex and difficult design needs, whilst also providing an excellent platform for coordination, problem solving, planning, and sequencing the construction works. 

The 3d models are made available for use by all interested parties during the shop drawing and construction phases, and are used extensively in design and construction meetings to provide absolute situational clarity which you otherwise wouldn’t obtain from simple 2d drawings.

During peak demand, we can also call upon our local network of contract drafting services.

Surveying

Alongside our impressive detailing capabilities we also operate an in-house surveying team, utilising a Trimble Robotic Total Station.

Used extensively to capture and validate the location of the as-built steel structure during the erection phases, the RTS has proven to be a highly regarded field instrument providing us with exceptional data.

This 3d survey data can be made available to our clients, and is also able to form the basis of as-built QA drawings if required, depending on project needs.

Transport

Our fleet is second to none. Piloting vehicles allow transportation of large loads 24 hours a day and to avoid site congestion we operate a “just in time” delivery method.

Our specialist hoisting and lifting gear allows the uplifting of materials and distribution around the site on an as required basis. Also, the proximity of our workshops to main arterial transport routes ensures prompt delivery.

Site Erection

Our experienced site staff along with our extensive range of cranes and access equipment can erect all of the fabricated steel while working seamlessly alongside our clients.
